3D Printing – Additive Manufacturing

3D Printing, also known as Additive Manufacturing (AM), covers a wide variety of processes used to manufacture three dimensional objects. This is achieved through a computer aided method in which successive layers of a certain material are formed to create the desired end product. This method allows almost any type of shape or geometry to be produced from a digital model. The reason 3D printing is also known as Additive Manufacturing (AM) is due to the fact it is the opposite process of traditional machining or milling methods. Most traditional manufacturing methods aim to create something out of a solid piece of material by slowly and precisely subtracting parts of the material until the desired product is formed. However, Additive Manufacturing, such as 3D Printing, adds successive 2D layers until the desired 3D product is achieved.

There are currently 7 main categories of 3D Printing established by the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM):

  1. Material Jetting
  2. Material Extrusion
  3. Powder Bed Fusion
  4. Sheet Lamination
  5. Directed Energy Deposition
  6. Vat Photopolymerisation
  7. Binder Jetting

Additive Manufacturing or 3D Printing all begins by creating a digital file of the object you wish to create via any 3D modeling software. Another incredible way in which these files are being created is via 3D scanners. 3D scanners use similar technology to Microsoft’s Xbox Kinect and are able to sense the light around or volume of objects in order to create 3D representations of the object being scanned. Once the model is uploaded to the computer, a 3D printer control software is used to upload the model and control printing.
