Crystal, also known as lead glass, is a variety of glass in which lead replaces the calcium content of a typical potash glass. It is known for its aesthetic properties of being more translucent and shiner than typical glass. It is used in the production of types of jewelry and decorative items and fine stemware and serving containers.

A few tips for distinguishing this material from typical glass are as follows:

  • When struck, this material will produce a material ring — normal glass does not;
  • If you wet your finger and run it around the rim of a Crystal glass or bowl, it will produce a musical tone;
  • If the object is thinner than a normal glass or container, it is more than likely made of the subject material;
  • Typically has clean, well-rounded cuts as opposed to sharper cuts on traditional glass.
  • Will create a prism effect when held up to light.
